Enrique is the founder of the AVANTUM":http://avantumcomunicacion.com/ Marketing Agency, which has just moved into its new premises right on Madrid’s Puerta del Sol at the very heart of the Spanish capital. HIS EAE EXPERIENCE
WHY DID YOU SPECIFICALLY DECIDE TO TRAIN IN MARKETING AND COMMERCIAL MANAGEMENT?
I came from a Business Administration and Management background, where you can see the operation of each company department in general terms. There had never been any doubt that I had always been drawn towards Marketing and I knew that, if I continued studying, it would be in that field. Advertising had always interested me since I was a child, but gaining real insight into what Marketing is has made it a true passion of mine.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO TAKE YOUR MASTER AT EAE BUSINESS SCHOOL?
There are several factors that made me choose EAE to take my Master. You can find all sorts of comments online, good and bad, but weighing it up, EAE was the school that offered me the best conditions, both in terms of cost and hours of training and international experience.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY WERE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF YOUR EAE EXPERIENCE?
I would basically highlight three factors. The first would be the international experience you get in the classes, which enables you to see concepts with a completely different and broader perspective than you would get if you only operated at a Spanish level. Secondly, I would say the day-to-day personal contact. Everybody, from the reception and cafeteria staff right through to our esteemed programme coordinator, made everything run more smoothly and let us focus on our classes. Last but not least, the teaching faulty. I have lots of really good memories of all of my teachers, but I feel that some of them, such as Cesc Rufas, José Robinat and Raúl Ciprés, will have an influence on my philosophy of Marketing for the rest of my professional career. It has been a true honour to have had the opportunity to learn from them.
HIS PROJECT: AVANTUM MARKETING AGENCY
HOW DID THE OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE YOUR OWN MARKETING AGENCY COME ABOUT?
It is quite an odd story. I was finishing my Master in Barcelona when I was proposed the idea of setting up Avantum in Madrid with two other people. They were aware of my experience at "Un Buen Día en Madrid":http://unbuendiaenmadrid.com/ and knew that I was coming to the end of my Marketing studies, so they felt they could trust me. Once I got to Madrid, things got complicated and one of the partners decided to leave the project. After starting practically from scratch, in the end, the project moved forward with me and my current partner at the helm.
One thing I have learned about embarking on an entrepreneurial project is that you can never trust your mood. When you are in a good mood, you see things too positively and you take your eye off the ball. In the bad times, you want to give it all up. In the end, the important thing is to be very clear about your objective and fight to achieve it, regardless of which side of the bed you get out of.
WHAT IS THE MAIN REASON THAT YOU HAVE DECIDED TO MOVE YOUR OFFICES TO ONE OF THE CITY’S MOST EMBLEMATIC SPOTS?
Without question, setting up premises in the Puerta del Sol demonstrates a huge commitment to the future for Avantum. When the opportunity came up, we did not hesitate for a second. Being in the centre of Madrid not only projects a better image to clients, but it also ensures that you are at the heart of the market, where everything happens. Just a few metres away, we have a large number of suppliers and potential partners, and an endless selection of prospective clients. Now more than ever, we are confident in our project and will keep fighting to make it a success, day after day.
TO FINISH OFF, WHAT LONG-TERM FUTURE DO YOU SEE FOR THE PROJECT?
I would love to lead projects that I am passionate about and have a team of people who are committed enough that we never have to say no to another project. At the moment, we have really interesting clients, from Jorge Astyaro, a hypnologist specializing in the subconscious who, as well as speaking at conferences, helps people change their habits through hypnosis, right through to a Traditional Beer Club. I would love to keep moving forward along this path.
