“The SDGs are the objectives on which all the company’s policies and actions are being focused, including all its stakeholders, and particularly the people who work in the organizations”.
Pilar Llácer
Lecturer and researcher at EAE Business School
With input from our best researchers and lecturers, EAE has published the Employment Report 2019, an interesting report that, as well as data on the employability, professional progress and return on the educational investment of the School’s students, also presents an analysis of the trends that will shape the future of the world of employment and entrepreneurship. As Professor Pilar Llácer explained, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) have become fundamental guidelines for the future of business. With this in mind, it is high time we found out what they are all about. Let’s get started!
What are the SDGs and what are their objectives?
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are the result of an agreement reached in 2015 between 150 heads of state, who decided to set guidelines with the aim of achieving a more sustainable world by 2030. The goals strive to respond to a diverse range of problems, such as poverty, gender equality and climate change, as well as protecting the planet and promoting sustainable development. The aim is for both companies and employees to embrace policies and drive forwards initiatives that make the world a better place to live for everybody.
How are they supervised?
As Professor Llácer explained, the SDG are not stipulated by law and so there will be no legal consequences for not implementing them. However, the SDGs represent a social, economic and environmental commitment that transcends the law and tests mankind’s willingness to improve the world. In any case, the SDGs will be examined using various global indicators and measured through annual meetings and reports.
What measures will be implemented in 2020?
Some of the measures that will be implemented over the course of 2020 in order to comply with the SDGs include establishing gender equality programs at all levels of the organization, creating areas that promote health and wellbeing among employees, and running programs for leaders on the importance of the SDGs and their impact on stakeholders.
Now that we know what they are and why they are important, let’s look at the SDGs one by one.
