The session included the participation of Pouria Sayyad, the Senior ICT R&D Technical Lead at i2CAT Foundation, the non-profit organization that promotes research, development and innovation activities in sectors such as architecture, apps and new generation 5G. Entitled "Cloud Tools: How to transform your business", the web conference focused in digital innovation in all sectors of society, from private companies right through to consumers and public institutions.
Pouria explained that the "digital success means bringing data closer to the value of the company". Therefore, digital companies organize their business models as a code through their data asset. Data is extremely important as "digital companies convert data into the company's value through the use of software". According to Wikipedia, the Cloud is a computer system's set of resources (high-level configurable services) that can be provided quickly with minimal effort in terms of management, often through the Internet. The scope in this respect is infinite.
Wearables, smart vehicles, smartphones and computers use the Cloud on the Internet through various providers (One Drive, Sales Force, Oracle, Google, iCloud and Dropbox), all of which have different business structures. There are three distinct Cloud models: IaaS, Paas and SaaSm, all of which have a structure or a hardware that serves as the platform in each business model. In any case, "apart from the technology, the essential aspect is that the Cloud is available to everybody" explained Pouria.
The main elements that differentiate a digital company are the ideas, the data and the relationships that they build with the consumer. In this respect, apart from the hardware, they have to set themselves apart in aspects such as being the fastest to bring new ideas to the market or to react to the customer's feedback, as well as optimizing aspects such as storing, analysis and predicting the data.
The second role of Digital Business is to supply new ideas quickly to the market, analyse data in real time and place consumers firmly in the centre. Pouria gave the example of Amazon's monolithic model and its development of apps. She then went on to describe a significant shift in architecture through microservices such as customer orientation, developing a simple proposition and satisfying through APIs. Changes are also taking place in terms of the organization and different action plans based on the lifecycle of development of each microservice. With this approach to working, continuous integration can be achieved, as well as the possibility of introducing numerous, small changes in the production process. "In this way, the product can be improved constantly. That is the great change that Cloud companies facilitate". This is the direction that most Cloud service providers are heading, like Amazon with its security apps and other specific products, added the expert in digital technologies.
Business providers on the Cloud promote the idea of "building and owning what is essential for your business, and buying the rest". This relates to the third characteristics of Digital Business, which consists of adopting a microservice structure and an agile culture when developing new solutions for the market.
The shift in the telecommunications system from 4G to 5G will significantly change connectivity and the market. For instance, Barcelona is embracing 5G within its city model, as a system that streamlines technology designed with the citizen in mind. This shift requires a change in mindset with respect to understanding the applications of digital technology in companies. Innovation is accompanied by aspects such as (business) viability, (human) desirability and (technical) feasibility. In short, it results in the "your service's capacity to develop something good", summarized the telecommunications expert.
"With 5G, the efficiency of our products can be increased", explained Pouria, adding that "by understanding the Cloud, we can create safer cities and enhance its inhabitants' quality of life, with more efficient, better organized and less polluted cities thanks to 5G telecommunications technology. "We estimate that revenues generated from digitizing industry with 5G capacity for the key players in the field of ICT will be 1.3 trillion dollars in 2026". According to the expert, in terms of adding value to new technology companies, the capacity of data (storage, analysis, protection and prediction) offers great opportunities to developers of digital companies.
