One of the most emotional highlights for the EAE Community at the 2019 Graduation Ceremony in Barcelona was the speeches of the student representatives. In this case, María José Bertrán, a student on the Master in Marketing Management, says that she experienced a mixture of feelings at being the spokesperson for the students. Here, she explains her experiences at EAE and her future.
What did it mean to you to be the student representative at the EAE Graduation Ceremony in Barcelona?
I had a mixture of feelings: representing the students is, first and foremost, a great responsibility. Trying to sum up in 5 minutes everything that this dedication and time spent studying has meant to us all was no easy challenge, primarily because everybody has had different experiences. However, in the end, I think that one thing we all have in common is that, with passion, effort and drive, we are able to achieve anything we want to. Without a doubt, it has been a great honour.
What was the inspiration for your speech?
I took my inspiration from the leaders we have had over this period, such as the Director of my Program, Marketing Management, and many other lecturers. But I wanted to focus more specifically on the values that these leaders have conveyed to us. In the end, it is values that enable you to develop as a person and as a professional. It is what you take away with you. We can apply them throughout our lives from this point onwards: perseverance, effort, attitude, will, joy and generosity.
What are you taking away with you from your time at EAE Business School?
Lots of classmates who have gone on to become good friends, as well as a great deal of knowledge. As well as learning about new topics, I have acquired the capacity that we have all developed to combine our work, studies and personal live. I am taking the great lessons taught be brilliant lectures away with me.
Why did you decide to take the Master in Marketing Management?
I have been working in the professional world for 13 years and I wanted to broaden my training, complement my degree, revitalize my career and learn new things. I didn't want to stagnate. I have always worked in the field of communication and I wanted to round it off with a more global and analytical Marketing perspective.
How do you apply the knowledge acquired on the Master in your current job as the Director of Communication at Ediciones Deusto, Alienta Editorial, Gestión 2000, Para Dummies?
I really apply the global and analytical view that I acquired on the Master and I have noticed that I even apply it subconsciously.
Why did you choose EAE to do a Master?
After looking at several leading business schools, EAE best fulfilled the requirements I had. It is a well-respected school with an excellent faculty who also work in different sectors, many of who are entrepreneurs. So, I thought that I would not only learn the theory but also how to put it into practice. I knew that I would gain a lot from the experience.
What personal and professional values have you gained at EAE?
In terms of personal values, I would highlight the camaraderie and the generosity of the lecturers. They are keen to help you, clear up your doubts and give really personalized tutorials and support. In addition, with the group projects and the Master's Thesis, you learn to share, compromise and respect other people's opinions. These values are both personal and professional at the same time.
Why would you recommend this university to other students?
Because it is really rewarding getting to know the professionals who teach the courses. As well as the practical case studies you look at in class, they explain examples from their own professional experience, how they successfully overcame problems and failures in the beginning. They teach you how to get back up after falling down, explaining how they made their achievements. It is a Business School that boasts lecturers of the highest level, which is really important for all the students.
Where do you see yourself in a few years' time? How do you want your professional career to develop?
The truth is that it is hard to visualize, but it is important to have an objective. Looking to the future, my objective is to make progress in my sector, in the field of communication, which is what I love and where I want to continue building my professional career. The key is simply having the desire and drive to move forward.
